To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that He might be glorified.
Beauty for ashes
I first heard these words in a song with the same title while in a Sunday service.
I find it very paradoxical. But at the same time I find it very beautiful song.
Mankind have many attributes that qualifies one to be called beautiful. One source says, there should be symmetries in the face to make a person beautiful. Another source says, this set of attributes makes a person beautiful in their culture. Another says beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
But what does God says?
I believe to be beautiful in God’s eyes, we need righteousness which is only possible through having a relationship with Lord Jesus Christ and having that joy. Smiling makes a person beautiful outwardly. Who would like a person who is always frowning? It’s such a turn off.
And I believe a righteous person in Christ will always have and SHOULD MANIFEST joy of one’s salvation. One pastor said, a soul that has been saved in Christ can’t remain silent.
So beauty is not because of our genetic endowment. It goes even deeper into a person- the inner man. Beautify yourself through Christ’s righteousness.
